When asked what paint do you use, our answer is 'only the best.' Every paint manufacturer has an array of products, with characteristics for each line. Most career painters will let you know which line from which maker they like and for what reason. Usually this is based on experience and some of it not good experiences. Making a product perform to the best of its ability requires technique. Making a good product perform well regularly and reliably is even better. There have been many leveling forces at work in the industry. As the lead was removed in 1978, other metals have been added or other formulations of paint sought. One maker moved to using zinc to replace the value lead gave the paint. And now with out-gassing of paints becoming more regulated, new behaviors are emerging all the time. Different bases are used for different depth of colors. The art of mixing paints is one that a few are very good at.
We use the best quality paints with names like Duron, Benjamin Moore, and Sherwin Williams. The quality of a paint is just as important as the quality of the paint job. Hiring a painter that uses a lesser quality paint is going to cost you more money in the long run.

Why paint every 5-7 years? Exterior paint has a sacrificial nature. It tends to wear from the sun and rain exposure and ultimately will wane. The most obvious sign is when you can brush your hand along the siding or trim and you have a chalk residue in you hand. At that point, the house is unprotected. As a visual example, place a piece of wood in a nylon stocking. Pour water over the stocking and wood. Now we find the wood is wet. This demonstrates the fact that there may appear to be coverage because we see the paint, not the wood.
This common misunderstanding costs property owners millions a year in repairs. Replacing the wood with PVC or fiber cement products can help, but any wood is subject to this process and the quality of caulk used is critical also. Some caulk products last maybe 6 months before they open and fissure. Others are warrantied for 50 and 60 years. Preparation is the key to success, esp. in painting.
